Honest
Truth leads to trust, and a customer’s trust is more valuable than any money to be made
from a sale.
"The heart and soul of all success is trust." from The Speed of Trust by Stephen M. R. Covey, son of Dr.
Stephen R. Covey.
There is no quicker way to build your sales career than by establishing a reputation of
honest. Being honest means not just being honest with others, but also being honest with
yourself. In fact, honesty starts with being honest with yourself. Honesty comes from within.
How can you possibly be honest with others if you have not learned how to be honest with
yourself. Being honest means telling the truth even when it isn't to your advantage to do
so. That doesn't mean that if someone cooks you a meal that you don't like that you should
tell them that you don't like it. There will always be times that a little diplomacy is required in
order to prevent from hurting someone's feelings. But other than certain situations where
you may not want to hurt someone, honesty is always the best policy. And let me make this
perfectly clear, to paraphrase Winston Churchill, never, never, never, never, never, never,
never, never lie to a customer or a prospect.
Most people don't flat out lie, at least not blatantly. Instead the engage in beating around
the bush, withholding information, double-talk and "spinning" in order to manipulate the
thoughts, feelings, or actions of others.
If you have to lie to sell your product, you either need to find another product, find another
line of work or change your ethics. Because sooner or later your duplicity will be found out
and your sales career will suffer tremendously as a result.
Also, if you think that you can be honest at work but dishonest in your personal affairs, or
vice-versa, you might want to re-examine that belief, because dishonesty in one area leads
to dishonesty in all areas.
The rewards that you gain from living an honest life cannot always be measured in dollars
and cents. How you accomplish something is just as important as what you accomplish.
How your generate current results can create huge roadblocks to future results or it can
create great opportunities. It's much easier to get results when people trust you.
"The greatest profit may not be in the current transaction, but in the credibility and trust that
comes from that transaction that paves the way for even greater results in the future." from
The Speed of Trust.
