Hygenic
Cleanliness is next to Godliness
I hope that this attribute is self explanatory.
When I see young people with tattoos that are visible outside of their clothing, I can't help but
think that if they ever decide to try their hand at sales, they are going to have a hard time at
it. First of all, just getting hired for a sales position will be hard in and of itself. With all of the
people out there competing for jobs, why would a sales manager even consider hiring
someone who has a tattoo showing on their arms, hands or neck? Nose rings, eye brow
rings and earrings on men are also sales no-no's, but at least you can remove these articles
during business hours..
Visible tattoos and facial piercings are two extreme examples of how you look, dress and
smell can have a major impact on your sales career.
Obviously, proper professional sales attire is a must. Depending on exactly what field your
are in, your business attire can vary from casual dress to suit and tie, but whatever you wear,
make sure that it's properly laundered, pressed and appropriate. If you can afford to have
your business clothes dry-cleaned, then I highly recommend that you do. Also, make sure
that your shoes are always shined. I remember hearing one time that the best way to judge
a persons financial situation is by looking at their shoes.
For men, hair-styles can be very important. There is no such thing as too short, but long
hair can be a turn off to some people. Whatever your hair style, at least make sure that it is
clean and neatly styled.
Body odor and bad breath can be a problem. Daily baths and/or showers can prevent the
former, but it's hard to know if you have the latter. If you can, ask your dentist if he thinks
you have bad breath. Tell him that your job requires close interaction with people and you
want his professional advice as to whether or not you have halitosis. Bad breath can be a
major turn-off for some people and can kill your chances for the sale before you are even
out of the gate. Brush and floss your teeth regularly. I buy those floss sticks and carry them
around in my car. They're cheap and they work great. If you drink lots of coffee during the
day, smoke or eat foods with strong flavors like onions, garlic or peppers, you might want to
extra precautions to guard against bad breath. Gums and mints can help, but they really
only mask the odors temporarily, but they are certainly better than nothing. Mouthwash
works, but be aware that because they contain alcohol, your customers might get the wrong
idea if they happen to catch a whiff.
Also, while we're on the subject of smells, one of the most overlooked turn offs can be the
use of too much cologne or perfume. If you like to use liberal amounts of either, you might
hedge your bets and ask your friends and close business associates to let you know if they
ever think that your scent is too over-powering.
Clean hands, with trimmed and clean finger-nails are also important. Nobody likes to shake
a sweaty hand. So wash your hands regularly throughout the day. Now days, it's not only a
matter of sanitation, but also a matter of health. Then the next time you meet someone,
reach out your hand, get a firm grip, smile and greet them with confidence.
