Mentally Tough
Sales is not a blue collar job. It's a white collar job. The difference between the two types of jobs is that a blue collar worker toils with his hands and his back and a white collar worker toils with his head and his heart.
If you are toiling with your hands and your back, you need to be physically tough, and so it stands to reason that if you are going to be toiling with your head and your heart that you need to be mentally tough. Like everything, sales can be an up and down game. No one wins every deal. That's an impossibility. But like batting in baseball, you only have to be successful 1/3 of the time and you're one of the best. That's the way sales is. You're going to lose some and you're going to win some. Or like the Dire Straits song goes "...sometimes your the windshield, sometimes your the bug..."
So when you first get started out in sales, you probably won't come shooting out of the gate. You'll stumble and fall and fail more than you win. That's where mental toughness comes in. Even after you've been at it for a while, you'll still have heart- breaking losses that will make you question your abilities. You might even wonder if you still have what it takes. It's times like these that you'll need to be mentally tough. It'll be your persistence and your tenacity that will pull you through. And only if you know that you are putting your soul into your work can you ever be certain that you will remain on top. Because nothing ever stays the same. Change is always inevitable and change always brings challenge. So change is nature's way of challenging you to see how bad you want something.
Mental toughness takes the changes and the challenges and makes them FUN!
