Responsible
Responsible- Being responsible means that you are reliable and can be counted on to live up to your
promises, not just sometimes, but ALL OF THE TIME. Anybody can be responsible some of the time. But if
you aren't responsible all of the time, then you're really not very responsible, are you? Because the very
definition of being responsible means that others can ALWAYS count on you. Responsible people don't
make excuses for failing to live up to a promise. Irresponsible people use any excuse to make themselves
feel better when they have to let someone else down.
Being responsible is one of the best character traits that you can develop as an individual. And as a
salesperson, a reputation for being responsible is priceless. When your customers know that you will live
up to your responsibilities, all of the time, they will not only want to do business with you, but they will be
more apt to refer their friends and associates to you. Think about it. If customers aren't sure that you will
take your responsibilities seriously, why would they want to recommend you to someone they know?
If you aren't sure how responsible you are, just see how many times you catch yourself making excuses for
not living up to your promises. When it comes to being responsible, you'd do well to remember the words
of Yoda, the Starwar's Jedi master, "do or don't do, there is no try."
Another way to know how responsible you are is to see how prompt you are for appointments. If you are
habitually late everywhere you go, then you are not being responsible. When you tell someone that you will
be there at a certain time, then be there at that time and not a minute later.
Responsibility is closely tied to honesty and reliability. If you are honest and reliable then you can't help but
being a responsible person. Responsible people will always be a valued resource in any situation, but
especially in business settings because the more responsibility that you display, the more responsibility
that you will be given. And the more responsibility that you can undertake, the more value you create for both
your firm and your firm's customers.
So quit making excuses for your under performance. Be where you say you will be, when you say you will
be there. Do what you say you will do. And most of all, live up to your full potential, for that is the ultimate
responsibility. If you don't fulfill your full potential, you aren't being responsible to yourself, and that is the
worst type of irresponsibility.
